A Small Child’s View of a Summer Garden

(Jennifer Lane , 10)

A thick jungle of long, swaying grass, swirling, spiky sticks weaving their way among the weeds. Poison needles wave menacingly in the breeze. Shell-like bells of purple and pink nod knowingly.

A stripy monster guards my path, its fat body suspended in the air by tiny wings.

A tower is ahead, filled with water. Winged dragons fill the sky with rainbow colours, chirping as they go. One dragon returns to its muddy cave where baby dragons sleep.

Vicious chattering beasts, grey bushy tails are stealing seeds from our clucking feathery friends. A moment later a beast jumps onto our roof.

In a lake I see round-headed serpents no bigger than my thumb swimming among the smooth rocks. Skating, surfing amongst the green heart-shaped leaves, hardly breaking the surface, streaked and skeletal bodies crinkle the water.

A scarlet berry with black spots that moves when I touch it.

Frail, feather-like, some flying eyes look at me from the sky.

Clicking, humming hullabaloo, so much noise in my wild summer garden.
